Glossary of Rabbit Terms
Figured anyone new to rabbits would appreciate this :) It is still a work in progress check back for much more.
Broken- A white rabbit with patches or spots of color.
Buck- Male Rabbit.
Bunny- Common Name for a Rabbit.
Dam- A term often used for animals that means Mother.
Doe- Female Rabbit.
Intermediate- In the Large breeds a rabbit between 6-8 months of age.
Junior- A rabbit under 6 months of age.
Kindling- A term used to describe when a female rabbit gives birth.
Kit- A Newborn Rabbit.
Litter- A group of baby rabbits born to a doe at the same time.
Molt- When rabbits shed their fur coat it is often called molting
Nestbox- A box that a female rabbit makes a nest in to give birth to her young they will remain there for 18-21 days.
Proven- This term is used when a rabbit has Proven they are fertile by either giving birth to or siring a litter.
Senior- In Small breeds any rabbit over 6 months, In the Larger breeds a rabbit over 8 months of age.
Sire- A term often used for animals that means Father.
Variety- A subdivision of any recognized breed they differ in color from other subdivisions of the same breed.
Wean- To remove the baby rabbit from it's mother so it can no longer nurse.
